We call Wintune« 95 a test and tuneup kit because it's more than just a benchmark. Knowing a few benchmark numbers about your system won't help you find out how to improve its performance. Our goals with Wintune« were to make a utility that:
CD-ROM based benchmarks like SysMark and Winstone are thorough, but installing the multi-megabytes of application files they require isn't easy or fast. Because they depend only on applications, they can't break out the performance of each subsystem. And they don't give you any help at all with tuning what you have to make it run faster.
Think of Wintune« like an engine analyzer for a modern car. It can look at the car's components and let the mechanic know if everything is set right and running smoothly.
But the work isn't done until the mechanic actually takes the car on the road and sees how it handles. Applications are like the road test of PC tuning. Wintune« can help you there as well by running application macros and keeping track of the run time in its database.
Using Wintune«'s diagnostic tests, you'll have your PC working up to its highest potential, whether it's an old 386 or a brand-new Pentium.
If you have installed a previous beta version of Wintune« 95, please uninstall it, then delete the directory, before installing this program.
IF YOUR HARD DRIVE HAS MORE THAN 2GB FREE SPACE, Wintune« 95 Setup will fail.
To date this has only been a problem for Windows NT users, since Windows 95 doesn't support volumes larger than 2GB. However, by the time you read this Microsoft will probably have released FAT32, an update to Windows 95's disk subsystem that will allow larger volumes.
We'll fix the problem in the next release of Wintune« 95, but in the meantime there's a simple fix: create scratch files to bring free space down below 2GB.
on your Windows 95 computer.
